 George Azar Jr., beloved husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully on Friday, March 6th surrounded by family at Bryn Mawr Hospital, just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was 87. May his memory be eternal.

Mr. Azar was born on November 19, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Lebanese immigrants George Azar and Madeline Abdullah. At the age of three, he moved with his parents back to their native Lebanon, to the village of Kousba in the northern Koura region. At the age of 18, he returned to Philadelphia, where he worked at Horn & Hardart's bakery to pay his way through barber school.  After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served for 4 years, first in Libya as a translator, and later in Greenland and Texas as a barber.  After completing his service he returned to Philadelphia where he worked as a barber. Mr. Azar was also an active member of Shriners International and Freemasonry, where he served as a Grand Master.

Mr. Azar is survived by his wife Helen Azar (né Ghazi) and their son Habib Azar (35), as well as three children from a previous marriage to Gladys Azar Crane (né Saddic) – Madelynn Azar-Cavanagh (59), George Azar III (56) and Michael Azar (51). He is also survived by five grandchildren, Colette Cavanagh (29), Hal Cavanagh (27), Calista Baramki-Azar (23), Naseem Baramki-Azar (16) and Habib Azar, Jr. (16 months) .Family and friends are invited to George's funeral service from 3pm Sunday March 8 at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 8210 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, Pa. 19082. Viewing one hour prior to service in the church. Interment will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the church.
