Barbara Martin Obituary

Barbara Jean (Bobbie) passed away peacefully at the age of 90 in the presence of her children. Loving wife, mother, and proud grandmother, Barbara was preceded in death by her Husband, Donald J Martin in 1996. She is survived by her four children; Dave, Steve (Lori), Sue, and Bruce (Tracy), and her three grandchildren; Andrew (Roshni), Sarah, and Zach. Barbara was born in Flatbush Brooklyn, New York on July 25th 1928 where she lived with parents and most beloved “Grandpa” until the age of 24. She met her husband on a blind date where he famously stated that he had no intention to get married anytime soon to which she replied, “so,” and six months later they were hitched.  They remained happily married for the next 43 years. While Donald was serving in the Navy, they were stationed in Hawaii where he enticed the reluctant city girl to learn to drive on the steep and narrow volcano roads of Maui. Supporting her husband’s career, first in the YMCA and then the many years he worked for the Boy Scouts of America kept her family on the move. They settled first in Vernon, New Jersey and then in Dutchess County, New York. Both a Cub Scout leader and Girl Scout leader, Barbara played an active role in her children’s lives. She also found the time to work alongside her husband at various summer programs for the Boy Scouts. In her later years she spent most of her time at her home on the Outer Banks, North Carolina searching for shells on the beach and learning to paint. Most recently Barbara lived in Wilmington, North Carolina until 2012 when she moved to Upper Darby, PA to be with family and friends.
