Alex Skivo(Schiavo), 84, Father, Teacher, Sports Fan

Alexander J. Skivo (Schiavo), 84, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 14.

Alex succumbed rather suddenly, just two weeks following a diagnosis of cancer, after twice surviving the disease. Born in the Belmont section of West Philadelphia, he was proud of his city roots. Those who knew him well as a young man called him “Center City Sonny”. He spent the last decade of his life writing his memoirs about growing up in West Philly and attending St. Thomas More High School. A passionate sports fan, he followed the Phillies, the Sixers, and was able to experience the Super Bowl Victory of his beloved Eagles. He spoke and read extensively about the Brooklyn Dodgers, particularly the ’55 team and for the last 25 years he could tell anyone whatever there was to know about the Nittany Lions Football team. As he raised his sons in Drexel Hill, he was known to all their friends and parents, as the Dad who would drive them everywhere.

After High School, Alex joined the US Coast Guard, serving 4 years, then enrolled in St. Joseph’s University, graduating in 1960 with a BA in English. Alex also attained an MA in English and an MS in Counseling and Human Relations from Villanova University. He subsequently earned ABD and certification as a school Psychologist from Bryn Mawr College. Alex began a long career in education, teaching English at Monsignor Bonner High School, Archbishop Carroll High School, and Archbishop Prendergast High School. He was head of Guidance at Archbishop Carroll and Archbishop Kennedy. Alex was also an adjunct professor of English at Montgomery County Community College, Gwynedd Mercy University, and West Chester University.

After retirement he became a substitute teacher at Conestoga High School. His years at Conestoga were one of the most rewarding and exhilarating experiences of his life. He spoke frequently of the warmth and support from staff and students.

In addition to his exceptional abilities to relate to students in the classroom, Alex loved interacting with countless young people at his favorite haunts in Chestnut Hill.

One of Alex’s most striking characteristics was his passion for social justice. He was very active in promoting peace, equality, and human rights. A true renaissance man, he was an avid reader, a lover of the arts, and an astute and knowledgeable sports fan.

Alex, above all else, was a loving and dedicated Father of Alexander J. lll (Jennifer), and Jonathan M., prideful grandfather of Samantha, Gabriella, Marino, and Lulu. He remained a close and loving friend to his former wife, Joan, and is also survived by two sisters, Joan Hulihan, Marguerite Palmer, three nieces, four nephews. All who knew Alex, especially his family, feel the profound loss of this truly remarkable man.

Services will be held at Vraim Funeral Home, 66 S State Rd. Upper Darby, PA 19082 Saturday February 24. Family and friends are invited to call from 11:30am-1:30pm, followed immediately by a Memorial Service celebrating Alex’s life.
