Anastasia Papaioanou Obituary

Anastasia Papaioanou passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, February 5, 2026. She was 94 years old.

Anastasia “Soula” Bebi was born December 24, 1931, in Lehovo, Florina, Greece. Her father, Pantelis, returned to the United States soon after she was born to work and send money back to the family during the depression.  Pantelis came back home to Greece 7 years later and her brother Constantine was born.  Her father once again returned to the United States to work and with WWII breaking out, the family lost contact with their father for some time periods during WWII.  After turning 16, her father returned to Greece to reconnect with the family and Soula for the second time.  The family then immigrated to the United States in 1948 and settled in Philadelphia.

Soula went to the McCall school to learn English and graduated in 1949 from West Philadelphia High School. She became a bookkeeper at First Penn Bank and enjoyed dancing and being with family.  She was introduced to Theofanis Papaioanou in 1952 by her father and his uncle and married 3 days later.

They built a life together for 60 years.  Soula was selfless and a dedicated wife and mother as she helped operate Court Luncheonette in Upper Darby, PA for 11 years while raising their three children, Alexandra, Joanne, and George. In “retirement” she helped raise their grandchildren splitting their time between their home in Drexel Hill and Loutraki, Greece.

She is survived by her children, Alexandra (husband Fotios), Joanne (husband Philip), and George (wife Katerina); grandchildren John, Maria (husband Michael), and Anastasia (husband Paul); grandchildren Anastasia and George; and grandchildren Anastasia, Konstantina and Theofania; and great grandchildren Angeliki, Alexandra, and Dimitri. She is also survived by her brother Constantine “Gus” Bebi, many cousins, nieces and nephews here in the United States, Germany, and Greece.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother; her family was her greatest joy. Her family will miss her deeply and cherish her memory.

Please join our family on Thursday, February 12, 2026, from 10:00am-11:00am for the viewing at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 229 Powell Lane, Upper Darby, PA 19082.
