Obituary

Argetta Vafiadis (Giannoumis) 83, of Philadelphia, PA passed away on September 12, 2023 at home surrounded by her family after a 9 year battle with Alzheimer's. Argetta was preceded in death by her husband John Vafiadis, her parents Andreas and Anna Giannoumis, her siblings Kosta Giannoumis, Margio Kambouris, Katina Chokas and her great-grandson Anthony Miller.

She is survived by her children Costas and Joan Vafiadis, Andreas and Eleni Vafiadis, Markela and Christos Sourovelis, and Anna and Thomas Kerasinis. Also survived by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren Pete Sourovelis- Kristin (Christos, Victoria, Markela), Angela and David Interiano (Joaquin, Jimena, Isabella, Olivia, Melanie), Jonathan and Tina Vafiadis, Arieta and Jonathan Torres (Ariana) George Kerasinis -Megan (Thomas, Caydence, James), Maria and Mark Malusa (Scarlett, Natalya) Alexis Vafiadis- Justin (William, Joseph), Yianni Sourovelis, Noel and William Hibbs (Athena, Liam), Yianni Vafiadis-Katie (Adrianna), Jessica and Eddie Metzger, Nicholas Vafiadis, Tiffany Sourovelis, David Vafiadis, and Aristides Vafiadis. 

She is also survived by her brother George Giannoumis (Ruth) and her loving sister in-law Angeliko Doulis and many nieces, nephews, and goddaughters.

Argetta was born in Chios Greece, Sklvaia where she attended elementary school up until the 4th grade and stopped school to support her family by working in their fields. By the age of 16 Argetta traveled to America by boat to Ellis Island, with her mother and her younger sister Katina. They resided in Philadelphia where she worked in a factory. A few years later at the age of 19 she reconnected with her childhood flirt and they later were married on September 4, 1960. They lived in Manhattan NY in an apartment building where they had four children in three years where she had to walk up 103 steps. In 1964, they moved to Philadelphia to be closer to their family, where they bought their first home. In which she and her husband raised their four children in every aspect of their lives. As she continued to work in a factory and then later an owner at the Bucks County Diner in Bensalem, Pa. Argetta loved her family, the church and her traditions. She always made sure she looked her best emphasizing on her hairstyle and her red lipstick. Argetta and John built a beautiful legacy that lives through their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

Family and Friends are invited to her viewing Monday September 18, 2023, 10:00-11:00am followed by Church Services: Evangelismos Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church 6501 Bustleton Ave Philadelphia PA 19149. Her interment will follow at Lawnview Cemetery Rockledge PA 19046.

Please respect Argetta's wishes by not wearing black, but by wearing colorful attire to honor the celebration of her life.
