Demetrios Stavropoulos Obituary

Demetrios (Meme) Stavros Stavropoulos, 91, of West Chester, PA, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025 surrounded by his beloved family who meant everything to him. He was born on July 18, 1934 in Elaiohorion, Achaia, Greece to the late Stavros and Evdokia Stavropoulos.

In his early teenage years, he emigrated from Greece through Ellis Island with a dream of a better life. Meme attended West Chester Junior High School and Malvern Preparatory School, before joining his uncle full time in the restaurant business. After their uncle got sick, Meme and his brother Bill took over the restaurant, and it was a pillar in the West Chester community for over 40 years. DeStarr’s Family Restaurant was the catalyst for the restaurant renaissance in the historic borough, and they were committed to philanthropic support to the greater West Chester community.

During a visit to Greece with his parents, Meme met the love of his life, Dina, in Patras, through friends. They married and returned to West Chester in 1963, where they shared a love of church, family, and community. Meme and Dina were married for 62 wonderful years, where they were blessed with three children and four grandchildren.

Meme was a dedicated member of the St. Luke’s Greek Orthodox community. He served as a Parish Council Member and as the Greek Affair Chairmen, where he was known for his famous lamb shank recipe that they still use today. Meme was active in restoring the small church, Agios Nikolaos, in his village, Elaiohorion. Meme was a devoted and founding member of the AHEPA Chapter of Chester County, and served as president. In April 2025, he was awarded the Life Member Award of the Order of AHEPA, for his dedication and love for the organization.

Philanthropy was incredibly important to Meme, and he often gave freely and extended a helping hand to those in need. Meme was active in West Chester community events, and was honored by the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce. He was well-beloved around West Chester for his infectious laugh, warm smile, and inviting personality.

Meme was a proud American. He never missed an election, and donned his “I Voted” stickers with pride. He was an avid hat collector; his family brought him baseball caps from every vacation and event. He loved the Phillies, and frequently attended games with his children and grandchildren. He was a passionate gardener and loved spending time in the sunshine.

He loved watching Western and Mel Brooks films, cooking, and spending time with his family.

Meme is remembered by his friends and family as a joyful, caring, and giving man. Meme’s legacy is one of love, selflessness, and faith.

Meme is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dina, and his devoted children, Evdokia (Chris) Blazakis, Maria (George) Spyropoulos, and Stavros (Laura) Stavropoulos. He is survived by his four grandchildren, Niko (Amelia), Dina, John, and Demetri, and his siblings, Gerasimos Stavropoulos and Fotini Ventouri of Greece. He is preceded in death by his brothers Bill and John Stavropoulos.

Meme lived a long, full, and meaningful life. He will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know him. May his memory be eternal.
