Efthimios (Themio) Bekiaris born on December 25th, 1932 in Corinth, Greece and passed on March 3, 2022. He was the youngest son of Menio and Maria Bekiaris and had two brothers and two sisters (Niko, Mixalaiki, Loula, and Kiki. He is survived by his youngest sister, Kiki. Themio started his own tailoring business in the 1950s in Greece. He was later fortunate enough to have met his wife Eleni (Helen) Vasiliou in 1960 and married in 1961. They proceeded to have two children (Maria and Nikoletta). The family of four lived in Greece for several years before deciding to come to America. In 1969, the family packed up what little items they could fit into their suitcases and flew to America. Themio was known for merely glancing at a man and being able to size him up for a custom-fitted suit with little to no measuring needed. Once in America, he continued to use his talents as a custom tailor to support his family.
Themio’s daughters would later marry and have a combined five grandchildren: Nikoletta Tsekouras, Elaina Marie Millas, Elaine Tsekouras, Nickolas E. Millas II, and Nickolas Tsekouras. Themio loved his children and grandchildren. It can also be undeniably said that Themio relished spending time with his youngest grandson, whenever a local sports game was on. They especially enjoyed watching baseball together, sometimes late at night or midday, discussing the sportsmanship of a mutual favorite - Jimmy Rollins. This bond includes a special anecdote where he once borrowed a Phillies hat from Maria’s youngest son Nickolas - that hat would be often seen on him and would not be returned for many many years.
Throughout his life, Themio was well known for his sense of humor and quick wit. Whether he was out with friends, having dinner with family, or even being escorted to the doctors’ office by his son-in-law, Nickolas Millas - Themio took every opportunity to be playful and make a joke at each turn. He truly enjoyed evoking laughter and smiles that filled the room - undoubtedly a good characteristic that helped him achieve so many years on God’s green earth.
In his later years, he developed health issues But even then, all it took was a visit from one of his grandkids uttering “Hello Papou (grandfather in Greek)!!” to light up his face with a big old grin and contagious smile.
We would like to thank Fr. Christ who dropped everything to offer him his last rights. His surviving family thanks God for Efthimios’ 89 years, the laughter he brought us, and we prayerfully look forward to being reunited in the age to come.
Now in light of the love we had, tears we shed, and laughs we shared, we are reminded of Ecclesiastes 3: “To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die…a time to weep, and a time to laugh…a time of war, and a time of peace.” Goodbye to our sýzygos, Baba, and Papou (husband, father, and grandfather). May his memory be eternal.
