It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ekaterini Spyratos, who departed this life on January 12, 2025, at the age of 88.
Born on September 23, 1936, in Palia Vlachata of Kefalonia, Greece she was the beloved daughter of Dimitrios Karalis and Xanthoula Antonatos.
Ekaterini was a woman of remarkable courage and resilience. She endured and survived the hardships of war and natural disaster, always facing life’s challenges with unwavering strength and determination.
In 1968, she courageously emigrated to America with her husband, Stavros and their two daughters Maria and Anastasia, in pursuit of new opportunities for their young family. Settling into her new life in Philadelphia, Ekaterini began her career as a baker at Kypselis Baking Company, bringing the flavors of her homeland to her community, and later worked as a skilled seamstress whose craftsmanship was unmatched.
Her greatest joys were found at home, where her love of cooking, gardening, and baking created countless cherished memories. Ekaterini’s tsoureki and spanakopita became family treasures, crafted with care and shared with love. Her kitchen was a place of warmth, comfort, and tradition, a reflection of her generous spirit.
Ekaterini was preceded in death by husband, Stavros; and brothers Gerasimos, Othonas, and Panagis.
Ekaterini is survived by her siblings Olga and Dionysios (Peristera); loving daughters Maria Canakis (Nicholas) and Anastasia Floratos; beloved grandchildren Katerina Christakos (Michael), Panagiotis Canakis (Joanna), Spiros Floratos (Kristi Dodbiba), Stavros Floratos, and Marina Floratos (Steven Calakos); and great-grandchildren Zoe, Sophia, Penelope, Nicholas, Maria, and Theodoros.
Her family was her greatest pride and joy, and her love for them was boundless.
Ekaterini’s memory will forever be a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
May her memory be eternal.
