On September 3, 2024, Evelyn (Athanasion) Sapnas passed away peacefully at the age of 97, leaving a lasting memory in the hearts of all those who were blessed to know her. In her final days, she was surrounded by her family, returning the love and support that she had shown them through the years as the matriarch of the extended family.
Evelyn Sapnas, daughter of Athena (Cavounis) Athanasion and Eugene Athanasion was born on November 23, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA. She was married to Charles Sapnas on October 27, 1946 at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Philadelphia, PA. They were married for nearly 29 years before he passed away on October 11, 1975. She worked at Strawbridge and Clothier, which aligned closely with her hobby of shopping.
Her skin care routine was one that kept her looking far younger than her age and was admired by many. She loved going to the hairdresser and her hair was always absolute perfection. She also enjoyed gardening and appreciated the beauty of flowers. Evelyn made the most of the slot machines at the casinos and later enjoyed playing BINGO.
Yiayia, which Evelyn was lovingly called by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, enjoyed cooking and baking. Two of her delicious specialties were her koulourakia and homemade applesauce, which she made in batches of no less than 50 pounds of apples at a time! Every holiday season, Yiayia could be seen gifting boxes of wrapped Asher’s chocolates and a Lenox Christmas ornament to her family members as a special item by which to remember her. She also had the talent of crocheting, which she used to make an afghan for each of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her cleanliness, sense of humor, quick wit, strong character, and love for family will forever be remembered. May her memory be eternal.
Evelyn was predeceased by her devoted husband Charles Sapnas and her son, Stewart Sapnas, whose wife is Lynn. She is survived by her daughters, Anita Livaditis and her husband, Thomas; and Patricia Sapnas; grandchildren and great grandchildren: John Livaditis and his wife Marisa, sons Athan and Nicholas; Alisa Nicoara and children, Alexandra and Christopher; Charles Sapnas and his wife Jamie, daughters Sophia and Ariana; Christen Sapnas and her husband Levi; and Alexandra Sapnas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Greek Orthodox Church of the
Annunciation, 7921 Old York Rd, Elkins Park, PA 19027 or Pickering Manor, 226 North Lincoln Ave., Newtown, PA 18940 in memory of Evelyn Sapnas.
