George Hionis, 95, of Newtown Square, PA, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. He was born on May 7, 1930, in Kefalonia, Greece, to the late Gerasimos and Peristera Hionis.
George came to America through Ellis Island with hope in his heart and a dream for a better life. He worked tirelessly as a high-elevation bridge painter until 1973, when he began a new chapter by opening a retail beer and beverage shop in the early 1960s. Through both his hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, George built a life of dignity and generosity, always devoted to his family and community.
An avid hunter, George especially enjoyed pheasant hunting, a pastime that brought him peace, relaxation, and joy. He delighted in sharing his game with family, neighbors, and friends, reflecting his giving nature. George also cherished visiting his many relatives, always treasuring the bonds of family.
He is remembered by his friends as a caring and giving man. George often gave freely, whether offering his lunch to someone in need or extending a helping hand to anyone less fortunate. His legacy is one of love, selflessness, and devotion.
George is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Irene, and his devoted son, Dr. Jerry Hionis. He was preceded in death by his brother, Nikolaos Hionis, and his sister, Aikaterini (Hionis) Mellis, whom he missed greatly.
George lived a long, full, and meaningful life. He will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know him. May his memory be eternal.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at his viewing on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 30 East Forge Road, Media, PA 19063. His funeral service will follow at 9:30 a.m. at the church, with interment immediately after at Chester Rural Cemetery.
