George Stefanidis Obituary

July 14, 1928 —April 9, 2025

George Evangelos Stefanidis passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025. He was 96 years old. Born in Lechovo, Florina , in North western Greece.

While in Greece, George was known and referred to as “ο Αμερικανός” (The American). In contrast, in the United States, he was known as “ο Σκοπιανός” (The Skopje) to his acquaintances.

George witnessed the Nazi occupation and burning of his village on July 23, 1943 at the age of 15.

At the tender age of 15, George demonstrated extraordinary bravery by heroically transporting the President of his village on one of his family’s boats. He then guided him to a nearby village for safety, shielding him from the impending danger posed by the Germans.

George, after World War II, embarked on a journey to Germany where, along with family members, participated in the construction trade.

After leaving Germany, George embarked on his life’s journey to America as a legal immigrant. He worked diligently and tirelessly in the construction trade and various other businesses until his retirement at the age of 65 in 1993.

George, along with his late wife Olga, raised their three children in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. Throughout his retirement years from 1993 to 2020, George remained steadfastly and unconditionally supportive of his children, assisting them with their own businesses, projects, and families.

He loved and enjoyed living with his son Jim and daughter-in-law Stella. George had an immense unconditional love for Stella.

His lifelong pleasure of traveling as a widower continued until he was 91, allowing him to visit his family and friends worldwide.

He is Pre-deceased by his parents Evangelos and Eugenia, his 2 sisters, as well as his beloved wife Olga.

He is survived by his beloved brother Pantelis Stefanidis.

He is survived by his 3 children, Eugenia(Late Paul), Maria(George) & Jim(Stella) , his 6 grandchildren, Elizabeth, George & Stavros Stefanidis, Theo & Steven (Bridget) Gekas, Kostas Papajohn( the late Xara), 4 great grandchildren, and his Bernese mountain granddog(Gia), who he loved dearly.

His unwavering steadfastness and strength will endure through his bloodline. George will be deeply missed.

Family and friends are invited to view 10am Monday April 14, 2025 at St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church, 35 N. Malin Rd, Broomall, PA 19008.  HIs funeral service will begin promptly at 11am.  Interment to follow in Arlington Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the St. Luke Beautification Fund.
