Georgios Karamitopoulos Obituary

George Karamitopoulos, 84, passed away the morning of November 23, 2025.

He survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mary, and his three devoted children, Kiki (Christos), Greg (Lisa), and Dia (Kosmas). His true loves were his beautiful grandchildren Maria, George, Demetra, Pashalia, Lina, Yianni, baby Georgie and baby Demetri.

George was born in Omali, Macedonia, Greece on February 1st, 1941. He grew up in his beloved Tsotili, where he built a successful business as an iron worker. He married his lovely bride in 1971, and in 1977, he moved his wife and two young children to the US where he made Upper Darby and Saint Demetrios their new home. He and Mary were a team, she being his right hand and translator from the day they arrived and began his construction business. A decade later, they had their little Dia and their family was complete. His family and business thrived and before he knew it, his son Greg was by his side, continuing the legacy and making him proud as a father could possibly be. George served his community proudly, as a member of the Parish Council for over 15 years. Often recalling the festivals where he was cooking his lambs and souvles full of delicious meats in the psistaria. He loved making his wine, his tsipouro, his loukanika, and of course, his kebab for his grandchildren.

George was a very proud Greek man, with a great love for his family and friends. Having built his dream home, he loved having parties, engagements and any celebration possible, just to fill their home with joy.  He spent countless hours listening to his klarina and working on his glorious garden (not to mention, yelling about the many times he got banned from Facebook for his Greek political rants). His life’s work was teaching his loved ones how to do the endless things he knew, that they could never otherwise have learned. He had a tremendous wealth of knowledge and loved history. The word “meraklis” does not translate well, but those who knew him understand. He did everything with great pride and loved everything to be done well. George was a great man with great big mustache who loved with all his heart and wasn’t afraid to tell people exactly what was on his mind. For better or worse, you heard exactly what he was thinking, unfiltered! But that was his beauty, he was not afraid to speak his mind and always told his loved ones how very much he loved them.

Of all his many achievements, his greatest is his family.  His loving wife, 3 children, their spouses (who he loved as his own), and 8 treasured grandchildren, who are growing up and following in his and Mary’s footsteps. George was always bursting with pride watching them honor their faith, their culture and their beloved Saint Demetrios. He will be missed dearly by so very many people, but especially those who knew him as pappou and baba. May he rest in peace and finally be dancing to his klarina with the angels, and his friends who are waiting up there for him with a bottle of tsipouro.

Friend and family are welcome to attend his viewing from 10am to12 noon, Wednesday, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 229 Powell Ln, Upper Darby, Pa 19082.  His funeral service will take place at 12 noon in the church.  His interment will follow at Ss’s Peter and Paul Cemetery in Marple.   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.
