Harry Zografos, age 78, of Deptford, NJ, passed away suddenly on November 20, 2024, leaving an immense void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. A man of unshakable faith, boundless love, and relentless energy, Harry was the devoted husband of the late Liberty (née Miller), the cherished love of his life. Together, they built a family rooted in love and shared dreams, a legacy that will endure forever.
He was the proud father of George (Kathy) Zografos of Cherry Hill, Steven Zografos of Jersey City, Margarita (Aleko) Vrettos of Jobstown, and Konstantine (Angela) Zografos of Medford. As a grandfather, Harry was the heart and soul of his grandchildren, who lovingly called him Pappou: Haralambos G. Zografos, Cleo E. Zografos, Zannis A. Vrettos, Haralambos A. Vrettos, Sofia Zografos, Haralambos K. Zografos, and Liberty K. Zografos. To them, he was not only a grandparent but also their biggest fan, their storyteller, and their guiding star.
Born in Leontari, Thivon, Greece, Harry grew up in poverty, yet his indomitable spirit and work ethic shone through from an early age. At just three years old, he began working, proving from the start that nothing could slow him down. His name, Haralambos, meaning "joy/happiness shines," was a reflection of the light he brought into the world. His booming laughter, warm embraces, and signature hearty smack on the back were unmistakable expressions of his love.
Harry's journey was one of resilience and adventure. As a young man, he traveled the world aboard ships, soaking in the cultures and languages of distant lands. In 1963, he leapt into the unknown, immigrating to the United States in search of a brighter future. It was in South Jersey where fate brought him to Liberty, the woman who became his world. Their love story, built on devotion and sacrifice, inspired all who knew them.
Harry’s entrepreneurial spirit and relentless drive led to the creation of his own business, “Harry The Greek.” Through his success, he not only provided for his family but also gave generously to churches and monasteries, embodying the values of faith and philanthropy. Yet, his greatest pride was his family. He wept openly when speaking of his wife, children, and grandchildren, his love for them a constant thread in his life.
Though Harry’s achievements in America were remarkable, his heart always belonged to Greece. His frequent, whirlwind trips to his beloved homeland, sometimes lasting no more than a weekend, were a testament to his unbreakable bond with his roots. He ensured his children knew the Greece he loved, sending them every summer to experience the land and culture that shaped him.
To know Harry was to know a man larger than life. His presence lit up every room; his laughter echoed long after he had gone. Whether dancing the Tsamiko at a Greek festival or at any Greek gathering, delighting strangers with a phrase in their native tongue, or filling his home with family and friends, Harry lived with unmatched passion and joy. His vibrant spirit made him unforgettable, and his absence leaves a silence that will never be filled.
Harry’s unwavering faith, unending love, and deep pride in his heritage defined his life. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience—a beacon for those who follow in his footsteps. May his memory be eternal, and may the light of his life continue to shine in all who were blessed to know him.
