John Nicholas Goumas, 101, passed away peacefully at his home in Nether Providence, PA, on November 9, 2024, surrounded by his family. Nick was born on June 18, 1923, to the late Anthony N and Alexandria (Tsipis) Goumas, in Manchester, NH. He spent his teenage years assisting at The Puritan Ice Cream Parlor in Manchester, making ice cream alongside his uncle. He worked on submarines at the Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, NH during WWII. When the war ended, he attended Wentworth Institute of Technology, where he played baseball and received a degree in Refrigeration. He was employed by Westinghouse Electric Corp, holding various management roles in Pittsburgh and eventually settling in the Philadelphia region. His job took him to various countries, where he enjoyed learning the culture of each region and meeting new people.
After retirement, Nick continued to travel and had a lifelong quest to learn. He loved being surrounded by friends, both old and new. Nick enjoyed time spent with his family, friends, and neighbors. Those he loved were frequent recipients of his Greek culinary specialties, including spanakopita, lamb, or stuffed peppers. He was a member of St Luke Greek Orthodox Church, where he participated in the Senior Men’s Group, and cooking for “For Those in Need.”
