Maria Couloumbis Anthopoulos, a resident of Penn Valley, Pennsylvania, died at her home of natural causes on January 24, 2022 at the age of 95.
Maria Anthopoulos was born in Patras, Greece on November 18, 1926, and later moved to Athens as an infant and considered herself an Athenian. A survivor of World War II, including the Nazi occupation of Greece, as well as the subsequent civil war that tore the country apart, Maria came to the United States in the early 1950s to Temple University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. As an educator, Maria taught in a number of independent schools in Delaware and New Jersey. Maria married Philocles A. Anthopoulos (d. 2017) in Philadelphia, PA on March 11, 1961. She was married to Philocles for over 50 years. A devoted homemaker and mother, Maria returned to the classroom in the Philadelphia public school system as a substitute teacher for over twenty years. Her greatest pleasure, however, was spending time with her grandchildren and family.
Maria is survived by her two children, Alexander P. Anthopoulos (Lisa) and Athena A. Anthopoulos (John Grady) and her four grandchildren, Aliki M. Karnavas, Maria A. Karnavas, Stefan P. Anthopoulos and Christian D. Anthopoulos. Maria was one of ten children and is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held at St Lukes Greek Orthodox Church, 35 North Malin Road, Broomall, PA, on January 27, 2022 at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 am.
