June 15, 2023 Martha Makropoulos took her final breath, surrounded by three generations of loved ones.
Born on August 19, 1925 in Simi, Greece to Yiorgos and Haritomenee Volonakis. Married to Petros Makropoulos July 20, 1945, she is preceded by her parents, husband, sister and brother-in-law Zoi and Nick Cicalo and grandchildren Eric Torpey, George Manhim and Christina Zervoudis. She is survived by her six children Sultana (Marcel) Manhim, George (Elizabeth) Makropoulos, Tina Greaves, Theodora Torpey, Zoi (Costas) Zervoudis, Smaro (Douglas) Wolf and niece, Eleni Skiba. Beloved Yiayia to 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
She immigrated to Philadelphia, Pa with her family on June 20, 1970. She worked at Nazareth Hospital for 25 years. After retirement, she loved to travel and took seven cruises, including a cross Atlantic journey from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to Rhodes, Greece.
In 2011 she was honored by Metropolitan Evangelos for her devotion to the philanthropic ministry of the Greek Orthodox Community.
She was a terrific storyteller over a coffee with koulouria. She crocheted a blanket for each of her great-grandchildren and left behind many beautiful needle point table cloths, napkins and such.
Services will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Tuesday, June 20 - 10am viewing, 11am service; all are welcome.
