Mary George (Costalas) Mallas

Mary George Mallas (nee Costalas) of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, formerly of Springfield, Pennsylvania, passed away on June 12, 2026, in the company of loved ones. Born on April 20, 1933, she grew up in Philadelphia, the daughter of Greek immigrants, and remained deeply connected to her heritage throughout her life. She spent many summers in Chios, Greece, with relatives, a place that became part of the foundation of her family story.

Mary met her beloved husband, George Mallas, on the beach one summer, beginning a love story that would become the center of a full and beautiful life. Together, they raised three daughters, Jamie, Eleni, and Diana, and built a family that remained Mary’s greatest joy.

Mary was full of spirit from the beginning. In high school, she was a student leader, athlete, dancer, organizer, and friend to many, remembered as both ambitious and magnetic. That same energy carried through every stage of her life. She was warm, funny, stylish, honest, and endlessly charismatic, with a presence that made every room feel more alive.

To her family, Mary was the matriarch, the beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and YiaYia at the center of every gathering. She loved to travel and see the world, but she was happiest when hosting holidays, filling her home with family, laughter, stories, and more food than anyone could possibly finish. She had a gift for making ordinary moments memorable, from big celebrations to late-summer “Hoagie Days” with the people she loved most.

Mary will be remembered for her wit, charm, strength, and devotion to her family. She was deeply loved by her grandchildren, who were constantly drawn to her warmth, humor, and unmistakable spark.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Jamie Wilson, and Jamie’s husband, Russell Wilson; her brother, Nick Costalas; and her grandchildren, Dominic Rafetto, Gianna Wiseley, Nicholas Rafetto, Michael Wilson, and Victoria Wilson, and her great-grandchildren, Margot, Enzo, Alessandra, and Maeve. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Mallas; her daughters, Eleni Rafetto and Diana Mallas; and her brother, Jim Costalas.

Among many dedications in Mary’s life, she was an active member of St. Luke’s Orthodox Church, devoted to the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society.  Most recently a “Gardens Team” Bocce winner at White Horse Village.  

Family and friends are invited to view from 10-11am on Friday, June 19, 2026 at St. Lukes Greek Orthodox Church, 35 North Malin Road, Broomall, PA. 19008.  Her funeral service will begin promptly at 11:00 AM.  Interment to follow in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
