When we lose someone we most always reflect on the events of the person’s life: Birth, school, job, marriage, kids— details that justify a history over space and time. But occasionally one is born who transcends space and time, giving all who surround the gift of the eternal. This was my mother. It is not sufficient to say that Photeni Daftsios was born in 1931, but rather in 1931 a soul decided it time to bring joy to heavy hearts. My mother was the light that lead the way. The embrace that was the answer. Her smile dispelled doubts of The Divine, her laugh invited all to be born again in fresh discoveries of one other. It is not as important to know she was the third of six children but more that her scratchy siblings deemed her sweet vulnerability as the softest of landings for jagged edges. Will you know her with the names of her children, or rather with the knowledge that her children have lost their compass, that she was their direction in the dark? Daughter, sister, wife, teacher, mother and now light that dances across the sky — my mother was and will always be the promise of heaven.
Photeni is survived by her three children, Tina, Dean and Chris, and is now reunited with her love and partner, Athanasios. We miss you, mom.
Friends and family are welcome to attend her visitation from 10am to 11am Thursday, June 8, at The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunication, 7921 Old York Rd, Elkins Park, Pa 19027. Her Funeral service will take place at 11am in the church. Her interment will follow at Lawnview cemetery.
