Samuel Vasiliades Obituary

Sam Vasiliades was born in 1935 in West Philadelphia, the son of Paul and Sophia Vasiliades. His siblings are Bessie Zantopolous, Effie Morris (deceased), his twin sister Sue Andreades (deceased) and Leon Vasiliades. Sam was a graduate of John Bartram High School and later served as a medic in the U.S. Army from 1954 through 1962.

Sam was also a standout baseball player and played minor league baseball in Orlando, Florida for the Washington Senators organization. A lover of all sports and all Philadelphia professional sports teams, baseball always remained his first love. He coached baseball and softball at various levels from his grandson’s tee-ball teams up through the Cabrini College women’s softball team.

Sam married the lovely Helen Treephos of Lancaster, Pa in the spring of 1964. Shortly after, he became the father to two children, Nick Vasiliades of Jacksonville, Florida and daughter Sophia Renzi of Boothwyn. An ardent family man, Sam also enjoyed endlessly feeding his eight grandchildren and one great grandchild at “Sam’s Kitchen”. Omelets were his specialty.

As Sam got older and retired from coaching, he turned his time and energies toward volunteering at places like Delaware County Memorial Hospital and several hospice programs. His continuous smile and natural, friendly banter always made him a big hit with staff and patients alike. Sam was also a passionate member of the VA and a genuinely patriotic citizen. Miniature Milky Way bars and a tall glass of fresh, homemade iced tea were among his favorite snacks.

Sam passed away February 22nd with his wife and daughter at his side. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen, son Nicholas (Jennifer) Vasiliades, daughter, Sophia (John) Renzi, eight grandchildren: Luke Vasiliades, Nick DiTrolio, Gina DiTrolio (Eric), Casey Vasiliades, Gabriella Vasiliades, Anthony DiTrolio, Jill DiTrolio, Zachary Vasiliades and MoMo Vasiliades and his only great granddaughter Aubrey. May his memory be eternal.
