SOPHIA BOKAS, 96, died on April 21, 2020, of the covid virus. Sophia was the beloved wife of the late Gregory Bokas, the loving mother of Christopher (Deborah), Nikos (Patricia) and Irene (Nikos), proud grandmother of Katerina, Constandino, Nicholas, Christina and Anastasia, as well as the great-grandmother of six. A sister, Eleni DiPalma, survives her, and a second sister, Aphrodite Georges, predeceased her.
Although she was born in Manchester, New Hampshire (November 24, 1923), her family returned to Greece shortly thereafter, where she grew up and went to school in Avgerino, Kozani. As a young adult, she and her sister, Eleni, endured the ravages and privations of World War II, but managed to come to the US after the war, rejoining sister Aphrodite, and staying with family friends in West Philadelphia. She met and married Gregory in 1947, and together they owned and operated a restaurant on the Ocean City, NJ, boardwalk for 25 years. Their principal home was in Upper Darby, where they raised their family.
Sophia was a devout Greek Orthodox Christian, and proudly belonged to St. Demetrios Church in Upper Darby. May her memory be eternal.
