Sophie G. Mantakounis, 90, passed away on September 25th, 2025 in Glen Mills PA. She is survived by her four children, Maria Paffas (Anthony), John Mantakounis, Stephen Mantakounis (Dia), and Emanuel Mantakounis; eight grandchildren Dena Lonergan (Steve), Gian Mantakounis (Adrian), Sophia Paffas, Billy Paffas (Tessa), George Mantakounis, Chloe Mantakounis, Maximus Mantakounis, and Mia Mantakounis; sister in law Joan Mantakounis; and numerous cousins and godchildren.
She was born in Wilmington, DE, to Emanuel (Sam) and Mary (Rose) Koliakoudakis, as the older sister to George Koliakoudakis (Kolias). The family later moved to the Philadelphia area where she attended West Philadelphia High School. Her family belonged to St. George Greek Orthodox church, where she sang in the church choir alongside her sweetheart and future husband George Mantakounis.
George and Sophie later married in 1957, and raised their four children in Broomall, PA, where they built a community of lifelong friendships through the St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church. Both George and Sophie served in leadership positions in the church, Sophie as President of the Women’s Auxiliary from 1983 to 1984. Earlier this year, Sophie was recognized for serving 57 years as a member of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos.
For those who knew Sophie, she was a most kind, giving, and selfless person. Whether it was her time, energy, or skills, she always found ways to give to others. She dedicated countless hours preparing baked goods for - and staffing - the annual St. Luke Greek Affair. She sewed thousands of pillowcases and telemetry bags for patients in local hospitals and made dozens of Rosary beads for her community in Clearwater, FL.
Her most important role however, and the one she cherished most, was serving as the matriarch of her beloved family. She was happiest when surrounded by her loved ones, either when hosting family gatherings or celebrating their achievements. Sophie and her memory will be missed by all who loved her most.
Friends and family are welcome to attend her viewing from 10:00-11 AM on Tuesday September 30th, 2025, at Saint Luke Greek Orthodox Church, 35 N. Malin Road, Broomall, PA 19008., followed by her funeral service at 11:00 AM. The interment will follow the service at Edgewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Sophie’s memory may be honored through contributions to the church.
