Spyridon Sagias of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was born in Athens, Greece on June 3, 1937 to Evangelo and Zafiria, who preceded him in death.
Spyridon was affectionately known as “Bossy”, “Spyro”, and “Poppou” and was the fourth of five children born to Evangelos and Zafiria. Spyro spent his formative years in Athens, Greece where he met his wife, Athina Sagias. They were together for 62 years and had beautiful 60-year marriage. Spyro and Athina had three children: Evangelo(Angelo), Dimitros (Jimmy), and Haralambos (Bobby).
While in Greece, he served in the Greek Military for 2 years and following that he opened a successful tire shop. In 1970, Spyro courageously moved to the United States with his wife and their three children to pursue a better life for their family. Spyro and Athina were the only members of their immediate family to move to the United States. Spyro came to the United States to work as a tailor at Kessler in Hammonton, New Jersey. Then in 1979, he opened his own hot dog vending business in Philadelphia. Some of his favorite things included eating jelly donuts from Dunkin Donuts and KFC fried chicken, traveling to Greece, watching Greek tv, playing with his komboloi and sitting outside drinking Ouzo while eating meze. Spyro was a very loving and generous person to others in need. Spyro was also a great father and adoring husband. He was a hard worker and instill a great work ethic in his sons.
Spyro went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 16, 2023, at the age of 85. He passed alongside his wife and three children in his home as he wished. Spyro’s memory will live on with his wife, Athina Sagias, three sons: Evangelo, Dimitros, and Haralambos and their wives (Samantha, Tara and Colleen) as well as, his 14
grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Please join the family in the celebration of Spyro’s life on Monday January 23, 2023. His funeral service will be held at 11am at Annuciation Greek Orthodox Church located at 7921 Old York Road Elkins Park, Pennsylvania 19027. The Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service and will beginning at 10am at the church. Following the funeral, there will be a burial service at Lawnview Cemetery at 500 Huntingdon Pike, Jenkintown, Pennsylvania 19046.
