Stephen K. Polites, 84, of Drexel Hill, PA, passed away peacefully on May 21, surrounded by his loving family.
Steve was born October 19, 1940, in Greece (Vlachiotis, Laconia), the son of Konstantinos and Georgia, the eighth of nine sons and daughters. In Greece, Steve served in the Hellenic Army before immigrating to Yeadon, PA. After falling in love during a summer trip to his home country, he married Maria (née Patsourakou) on October 11, 1976 at the seaside chapel of Agios Petros (St. Peter’s) in Gythio, Greece. The two returned to America and happily raised two children in Upper Darby, PA.
For decades, Steve shared his love of cooking and people through his work at various restaurants, shops, and even a family-owned food truck located at 15th and Race Streets in Philadelphia.
Steve’s greatest goal was to work hard and provide for his treasured family, ensuring they never wanted for anything. He enjoyed the noise and energy of his large Greek family in the area and loved to tell stories about his time as a young man in both Greece and America.
His greatest joy, however, were his grandchildren, Maximos and Louis, who knew him as their loving, gentle, and endlessly devoted Pappou.
Steve will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his good looks and impeccable style, his story telling, his garden, and the love he poured into every moment of his life.
Remaining to cherish Steve’s memory are Maria; daughter, Sophia (and husband, Alex Walker) of Media; beloved grandsons, Maximos and Louis; and younger brother, Pete of Upper Darby. Preceding Steve in death and ushering him home is his beloved son, Constantine.
Family and friends are invited to view Wednesday, May 28, 2025 from 12:00-1 PM. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 229 Powell Lane, Upper Darby, PA 19082. His funeral service will begin promptly at 1:00 PM . Interment will follow in Fernwood Cemetary, Lansdowne, PA. 19050.
