Stylianos G. Zacharatos

October 9, 1938 – April 23, 2022

Stylianos Gerasimos Zacharatos, 83 years of age, passed away peacefully at his home in Upper Darby, Pa, surrounded by his family on April 23, 2022.

He was born on October 9, 1938 to Omiros and Nikoletta Zacharatos in the village of Feredinata, Kefalonia, Greece. In 1967 he immigrated to the United States after serving in the Greek Royal Navy and as a merchant marine for Aristotle Onassis’ Ship Line where he travelled the world.

In 1970 Stelios returned to Greece where he met the love of his life Angeliki Giannakopoulos of Kalousi, Achaias. They were married on March 1, 1970 in Patras, Greece.

He returned to the United States with his bride. He worked three jobs so he could open his own diner called The Hub on Girard Avenue, in 1973.  A few years later in 1980 he bought his beloved Avenue Restaurant in Philadelphia with his brother. He was affectionately referred to as “Stevie The Greek”. They owned and operated it until his retirement in 2004.

His last eighteen years were spent doing what he loved most: reading, gardening, caring for his canaries, traveling to Kefalonia, and surrounding himself with those he loved the most. Within a few minutes of conversation with him you would learn that he was poetic, scholarly, witty, and a true gentleman.

He was preceded in death by both his parents and his five siblings, Sotiroula Douis, Marianthe Karlik, Polixeni Karalis, Paraskevi Kontaras, and Antonios Zacharatos.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Angeliki Zacharatos and their five children and spouses: Omiros and Elizabeth Zacharatos, Vasilios and Kiki Zacharatos, Mario and Elizabeth Zacharatos, Nikoletta and Matthew Soler, Fotoula and Michael Newborg, Erica “Erikaki” Rapp, whom he loved as one of his own, and eight grandchildren, who affectionately remember him as “the kindest most loving Pappouli on Earth”.

Family and friends are invited to view Friday April 29, 2022 at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 229 Powell Lane, Upper Darby, PA 19082. Funeral service to begin at 11am.  Interment in Ss. Peter and Paull Cemetery, Sprfingfield, PA. 19064.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Upper Darby, Pa.
