Sofia Serafim Obituary

Sofia Serafim, 80, passed away peacefully at her home on March 10th.  She is survived by her children: Jaqueline, Taso (Nikki), Eugene (Denise), Effie (Yani) Kyranos, grandchildren: Lorelei, Lexi, Nakos, John, Sophia, Ani, and Alexander, and her loving nephew and godson Eugene (Joyce) Lithoxoos.

Born in Greece, she, her husband John and two children came to the United States in 1971 in search of a new beginning.

She was an extraordinary woman who gave her everything to provide the life she wanted for her family. She professed her admiration for her family every waking moment of her life. Upon entering the family room you will see a primitive Facebook wall with taped photos of her grandchildren, her children and their spouses covering every square inch of wall space.

She worked hard and expected that her family all do the same. She passed on to her family her work ethic by example and direction.

She believed there was nothing that she couldn’t do.  That belief was bolstered by creativity that was inherent in everything she did. When the going got tough she turned to her greatest strength – her cooking. Her pitas (spanakopita, tiropita, and pumpkin pita) and galaktobouriko rivaled the best.  Her cooking ultimately proved to be her legacy. She was famous for taking mediocre street food and making it gourmet.

Her sense of adventure, and love for the outdoors is probably what she and her husband John had most in common.  They spent much of their leisure time taking the family on trips to the Poconos.

“No” was a word reserved for her use only, as she would not accept it from anyone. Though for us she preferred the term “we’ll see“.

She leaves us having impressed upon her children all of her best characteristics. Teaching, coaxing, pushing, and pulling she never settled for anything but “The Best” from us.

Thank you mama, we miss you.
