I served on Zissis’s dissertation committee as he completed his Ph.D. at the New School for Social Research. It was a pleasure to work with Zissis. He was everything one could want from a budding scholar: disciplined, smart, organized, devoted. He cared deeply about the way the mind was able to perceive the world with acuity and sensitivity. He wanted to understand it as best he could. Even after graduating he continued to both teach students about the field of Perception, but also continued to produce first-rate research, published in some of the most prestigious academic journals. While Zissis’s sharpness of mind is one of the things I most cherished about him, what will linger in my memory is his caring nature, his wry sense of humor, his appreciation and tolerance of others, and, of course, his deep humanity. He was someone I felt privileged to know. His passing is beyond understanding.
