PHILOCLES A. ANTHOPOULOS
(June 3, 1916 – November 14, 2017)
Philocles Anthopoulos, a well-respected architect and structural engineer in the Philadelphia Area who founded and ran Anthopoulos & Associates for over 50 years, has died at the age of 101.
Born in Samsun, Asia Minor in 1916, Mr. Anthopoulos was caught up in the massive resettlement of ethnic Greeks from Asia Minor that occurred after the First World War; it left him orphaned at age four. Despite these difficult circumstances, and notwithstanding the wars that engulfed Greece in the 1940s, Philocles obtained a teaching degree, two degrees in music from the Conservatory of Music in Athens, and both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Polytechnic Institute of Athens. He was named one of 5 Fulbright Scholars in 1950, and received a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Arts in 1951.
Mr. Anthopoulos settled in the Philadelphia area afterwards, and opened his own architectural and engineering firm in 1959. He designed projects from Nicaragua to Saudi Arabia, as well as many hotels and motels on the Jersey shore and in Florida. He was known for his use of light and his efforts to incorporate sea views into his buildings.
Philocles is survived by his wife of 56 years, Maria Anthopoulos (nee Columbis) as well as their two children, Athena A. Anthopoulos and Alexander P. Anthopoulos. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Aliki M. Karnavas, Maria A. Karnavas, Stefan P. Anthopoulos and Christian D. Anthopoulos.
Age 101, of Penn Valley, Pennsylvania, on November 14, 2017. Beloved husband of Maria Anthopoulos (nee Columbis), and loving father of Alexander P. Anthopoulos and Athena A. Anthopoulos. Devoted grandfather of Aliki M. Karnavas, Maria A. Karnavas, Stefan P. Anthopoulos and Christian D. Anthopoulos. Brother of Jordan Anthopoulos and George Anthopoulos.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Friday, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 A.M. at St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church, 35 N. Malin Road, Broomall, PA 19008. Interment will follow at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, 215 Belmont Avenue, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004.
